The top ten websites to get parts from are listed below based on responses to this link in order from most responses to least. Is it worth it? I'm looking to make a little extra cash. What are your thoughts of buying broken laptops on eBay or anywhere else for the matter then repairing them and reselling them on eBay?

I don't think I'd do this too often, maybe once or twice a month. What's everyone's thoughts on this? Is it a good idea? Anybody with experience doing this? I would probably look for bulk lots. If you buy a broken laptop then have to buy an lcd for it, you're quickly eating into any profit potential. Haven't ever tried it, but that's just a thought off the top of my head.

At least in theory. I knew what you meant. Doesn't sound like a bad idea, I'd just have to have the money to buy a lot.

That's why I was thinking of buying 1 or 2 a month and then fixing them. But I definitely see what you're saying.

Thanks for the tip! And it seems like most laptops on ebay I've looked at don't have power cords. Just something else to keep in mind when figuring out if you can squeeze a profit out of a particular system. Yep, I've thought of that as well.

I'll be very particular when I'm looking around for that one laptop that I know should turn some profit. Depends on how long it takes and the cost involved in repairing and refurbing the laptops.

I guess it's subjective really. Considering I enjoy doing the work and can work at my own pace. If you can get the laptops for free, it's sometimes worth it but more often better to break then down and eBay the parts. Another thing you may want to think about is the OS licensing. You could get in some hot water if you don't follow the proper guidelines and rules. Whatever is left after buying parts is your take. Edit - I also recommend checking craigslist for used laptops.

Also advertise on CL that you will take used parts in exchange for tech work. I don't know how much used but sellable stuff I have gotten that way. Hey my shop in Florida is trying to offload a bunch of broken laptops for super cheap, problems range from screen replacements to jack repairs to mboards. There is somewhere between 15 and 25 laptops so I'm sure shipping would be rough but if your interested send me a message and I'll snap some photos for ya, we have them up on craigslist at the moment so they all will be available barring nobody stops by to pick them up.

If you buy in bulk and already have the keys for os or got a good deal on buying them cheap then I see no problem, plus if you buy broken computers in bulk like it's been said already you don't have to pay for replacement parts for something you're just going to sell, just see if any of the others in bulk have a working one and swap.

I don't see OS keys being a problem as long as the Windows license key sticker is still attached to the laptop. I don't believe that is how it works. You will either need the physical media CD that came with it or the Backup Partition on the Hard drive. If you don;t have either you will need to purchase a referb license from Microsoft. They have a referb program for doing this kind of work.

I would just build new systems for people and sell it to them with a bit on the top rather than go through the trouble of doing this. Some laptops might have more problems than you initially find and this can lead to lots of bad reviews on your ebay profile. As long as you don't assign any value to your time, or to the risk, or to the costs of selling them, you'll make piles of money!

Often they'll be in decent condition due to a lax life of office work, and they're very cheap if bought in bulk. Use of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement and Privacy Policy.
